Mendeley: Getting Started

What is Mendeley?

It is a reference management tool that allows you to manage and organize your references. It is available free for the basic version. This tool helps to organize and search your personal library and annotate documents. You can also cite as you write by installing the citation plugin. Install the Web Importer to save references and documents directly from supported websites.

Introduction

To get started:

1. Register a free account at http://www.mendeley.com 

2. Download Mendeley Reference Manager onto your laptop/desktop. To download, please click HERE.

3. Launch the Mendeley Reference Manager on your laptop/desktop and sign in to you your account.

4. Install the citation plug-in for Word at the Desktop version. Go to "Tools" >> "Install Mendeley Cite for Microsoft Word"

5. Install Mendeley Web Importer

  • To install Mendeley Web Importer, click HERE.
  • Alternatively, go to www.mendeley.com, select "Reference Management" >> "Web Importer".
  • Select the browser and follow the steps to install Web Importer.
  • Once you have successfully installed the Web Importer, you will see the "Mendeley" icon at the top of your browser. Click on the icon and sign in to your web account to start saving references and documents to your reference library.

Now that you have completed these steps, you are ready to build and organise your references using Mendeley.
